Have you been thinking about having a CT Beach Photo Session, either for your family or high school senior? Here along the beautiful CT Shoreline, we are blessed with so many wonderful beaches! It seems like there are so many options. However, there are a few things to consider before booking a CT beach photo session.
Time Of Day For Best Light
Before anything, the time of day for your beach session must be considered before anything else. Many of the photos you see on my website were taken at a very specific time of day, in order to achieve that beautiful soft golden glow.
Direct sunlight in the middle of the day casts the harshest and strongest shadows. This results in unpleasant squints and dark shadows on faces. It’s not a flattering look at all! Even to those that don’t understand the lighting rules of photography, it’s quite obvious that a mid-day shoot in broad sunlight doesn’t look ideal.
The best time for photo sessions at the beach, is usually about 90 minutes before sunset. This is also known as “golden hour.” However, if it is overcast the starting time may need to be a little earlier. This is because the sun will be gone and the sky will be dark in the last hour of the day.
If you book a beach session with me, I will recommend certain local beaches that I know and love.
Since I’ve photographed many sessions at my favorite beaches, I already know well in advance where the light will hit certain areas at certain times.
For high school seniors, I will often recommend starting your session at another location first. Then we can end your session at the beach as the sun is setting.
Lighting makes or breaks a successful portrait session, no matter where it is. Part of being a great photographer is knowing how to schedule your sessions for the best light.
What if my child can’t stay up that late?
Consider booking your beach session in September. The sun sets much earlier that in June, July and August, and it’s still beautifully warm. In fact, September usually has the most gorgeous light of the year!
