Newborn photo session prep can feel overwhelming, especially in those early days when everything feels new and exhausting. If you’re worried about your home, your baby’s mood, or how prepared you need to be, take a deep breath. An in-home newborn session is meant to be relaxed, flexible, and focused on your baby, not perfection.
Here’s how to prepare in a simple, stress-free way.

Newborn Photo Session Prep Starts With Light, Not a Perfect Home
The most important part of newborn photo session prep is light. Before I arrive, shut off all the lights and open curtains and blinds throughout your home. Notice which rooms feel brightest. We usually only use one or two spaces, often:
- The primary bedroom
- The nursery
- A living room with good window light
A quick tidy goes a long way. Clear nightstands, dressers, and counters in those spaces. No deep cleaning. No hiding your whole life.

Simple Changes That Make a Big Difference
A few small details can really help:
- Neutral bedding or a simple throw on the bed
- Turn off lamps and overhead lights
- Clear the floor near windows so we can move easily
- Don’t worry if furniture needs to be shifted. I do this all the time.
Photographers are very good at finding the right angles and backgrounds!

Prep Your Baby (Comfort Comes First)
Newborn photo session prep isn’t about forcing a sleepy baby. It’s about comfort.
- Feed your baby shortly before we begin if possible
- Turn the heat up a bit before I arrive. Babies don’t like to be cold, and a warm baby is a happy baby
- Expect breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing
- Have a swaddle, burp cloths, wipes, and a backup outfit nearby
Some babies sleep the whole session. Others stay wide awake. Both are perfect.

What Everyone Should Wear
Keep clothing simple and comfortable. Parents photograph beautifully in soft neutrals like cream, white, light gray, or muted earth tones. Babies only need a simple sleeper, onesie, or swaddle. Bare feet and tiny details are always welcome.
When you book a session with me, I’ll send you a simple style guide and prep tips so you don’t have to guess what will photograph best.

Feeding, Breaks, and Timing
A full baby is often a calmer baby, so feeding right before we begin can help. That said, breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing are always expected. Newborn photo session prep includes flexibility. There is no rushing.
Trust the Process
Some babies sleep through the entire session, others stay wide awake. Both are completely normal. I focus on natural moments, tiny details, and the connection you already share.
