A few weeks ago, I had the honor of doing my second, light-filled family photo session at Bauer Park in Madison CT, for my latest project called, Every Family is Beautiful.
What is the “Every Family is Beautiful” Project?
Social media often portrays one type of family – white, neuro-typical, able-bodied, cis-gendered, heteronormative families with 2 kids (one boy and one girl, of course). Of course, not everybody fits into this “box”, and therefore sends a terrible message. All families are beautiful, therefore it‘s always my mission to make them feel like they are.
Founded by Lyndsay Hannah Photography, a Massachusetts photographer, the “Every Family is Beautiful” project hopes to help change the narrative of what ‘beauty’ looks like, according to social media. By offering a set number of free photo sessions to capture a family’s unique story, the hope is to show that every loving family is beautiful in their own way.
Bauer Park Family Session
This loving family is a blended family. Jen and Leah were out with mutual friends when they met about five years ago. It was an instant connection. They were engaged a year later, and married a year after that. Leah told me that when they got married in 2018, it was just them, their three kids, and their rabbi. Jen made their Chuppah (wedding canopy) that they stood under as they were married.
Even though these three kiddos have been together as a family for five years, I could see the special bond they all had with each other. Being a blended family with two moms is not without it’s challenges though! Leah told me that one thing they try to foster is the two types of relationships that are here. First, the relationship between her wife and herself, by always making sure to have time for just the two of them. And second, the family relationship – making time to spend together, all of them together. Leah told me that they support each other and their goals.
We had such a beautiful evening together. Bauer Park in Madison never disappoints with it’s gorgeous late day light and variety of backdrops. The huge weeping willow tree had new blooms, and the pond was a golden reflection of the sun. There was a lot of love in this blended family and we had a lot of laughs together. I hope you enjoy taking a peek at our time together, and as always, thanks for stopping by the blog!
