If you’re wondering what to wear for maternity photos in CT, you’re not alone. As a CT newborn and maternity photographer, It’s one of the first questions I get from every expecting mom. And honestly, it can feel overwhelming when nothing quite fits the way it used to. The good news? You don’t need a perfect outfit. You just need something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and like yourself.
The Biggest Thing to Remember About Maternity Photos
What looks good in person isn’t always what looks best on camera. So even if you have a great eye for outfits, this one takes a little planning. Third trimester is when most maternity sessions happen, and that’s also when most mamas have a few things about their changing bodies that feel less than fun. The right outfit can quietly take care of all of that.
Why I Love a Long, Flowy Dress

A flowy maxi or midi dress is hard to beat for maternity portraits. Here’s why:
- It creates long, flattering lines.
- It gives your images plenty of motion when we walk, twirl, and pose.
- The extra fabric lets us shape multiple silhouettes throughout the session.
- A long dress conceals swollen ankles and lets you wear comfy flip-flops or boots underneath. No one will know.
If you’re going to invest in one piece for your session, this is it.
Not a Dress Person? You Have Options.

If you really don’t like a dress, you don’t have to wear one! These are your photos, after all, and we want them to feel authentically you! A more casual look is some great trendy jeans (you can wear your pre-pregnancy ones unbuttoned at the top) or maternity leggings with a button down or a long open cardigan and bra if you’re hoping to do bare belly photos. If you’re not into the bare stomach look, a flowy tunic, loose off-shoulder sweater, or baby doll style top that allows for draping are a great alternative. These looks will give us similar benefits to a maxi dress while helping you feel confident and like yourself.
Where to Shop or Rent Your Maternity Outfit
A few of my favorite places to find a maternity photoshoot outfit:
- Pink Blush for romantic, photo-friendly maxi dresses
- Baltic Born for elevated, flowy silhouettes
- Amazon for affordable last-minute finds
- Rent the Runway if you’d rather borrow something gorgeous than buy
What to Wear for Maternity Photos in CT: Choosing Your Colors

Color depends on the season and where we’re shooting. Autumn loves rust, burgundy, and forest green. Spring loves blush, sage, and dusty blue. Beyond that, you want to avoid blending in. In a CT park or open field, the landscape is lush and green, so skip green tones.
For beach maternity photos, the best dress colors are soft neutrals (white, cream, beige), pastel tones (light blue, blush pink, sage green, teal), or rich, solid jewel tones for sunset, which complement the natural, airy backdrop. Flowy fabrics that move with the ocean breeze, work best.
A few quick rules no matter the location:
- Earth tones and jewel tones are reliable choices that photograph beautifully against most CT shoreline backdrops.
- AVOID BRIGHT WHITE. It blows out in coastal light and rarely photographs the way you’d hope. Go with off-white or cream.
- Contrary to popular belief, black is not a great choice for maternity photos. It’s slimming, yes, but so slimming that it can hide your bump altogether. And capturing your bump is the whole point of the shoot.

Keep It Simple, and Add a Layer
When you’re choosing what to wear for maternity photos in CT, skip busy bold prints and big logos. Solid colors photograph best, and you get bonus points for pretty details like lace, soft pleats, or buttons. If you love a pattern, pick one that’s small and subtle. Layers give us extra options on the day too. A shawl, a kimono, or a long open cardigan instantly makes your photos feel more dynamic and can cover any area you’re feeling self-conscious about.
Don’t Forget Your Undergarments
What you wear underneath your outfit matters too. A well-fitting bra that doesn’t sag, dig in, or cause lumps under fabric will make a real difference in how the final images look. Purchase undergarments in advance so you have time to swap anything that doesn’t feel right.
One Last Detail
Treat yourself to a neutral or light colored manicure 1 – 2 days prior to your maternity session so that you can take some beautiful shots with your hands on your tummy.

What Should Everyone Else Wear?
- For Partners: Keep it simple. Tan khakis or denim jeans paired with a solid black, white, or neutral V-neck or crew neck t-shirt. Henley’s also photograph really well.
- For Children: Pick your outfit first, then coordinate theirs to complement it. Stick to neutral solids with a possible pop of color in an accessory to help tie the family together.

Comfort First, Always
Whatever you choose, please pick something you actually feel good in. The dress that looked stunning on Pinterest doesn’t matter if you spend the whole session pulling at it. Your body is already doing so much right now. What you wear should hold you up, not stress you out.
I tell every mama the same thing: when you feel comfortable, you look comfortable. When you look comfortable, you look beautiful. That’s the whole formula. Choosing what to wear for maternity photos in CT shouldn’t be the hardest part of preparing for your session.
