Let’s talk about what to wear for your winter maternity session. Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you have to bundle up in bulky layers and skip your dream of a beautiful dress. Winter maternity sessions can be absolutely stunning—magical light, cozy textures, and that crisp air that adds something extra special to your photos. With just a little planning, you can stay warm and look amazing.

Layers Are Your Best Friend
When deciding what to wear for your winter maternity session, the key is layering smart. A flowy, maxi-length dress not only photographs beautifully, but it also allows you to sneak in a pair of fleece-lined leggings or thermal tights underneath. No one will ever know! Pair that with wool socks and warm boots (trust me, they can be cute and practical), and you’ll be golden. On top, bring a stylish coat, shawl, or cardigan to throw on between shots—or to include in a few!

Keep It Cozy, But Make It Stylish
Winter light is soft and flattering, and pairing that with cozy textures makes everything feel a little more magical. Think chunky knits, scarves, and long, drapey layers. Texture really comes to life in photos, especially against the neutral tones of winter. Earth tones, jewel tones, and soft neutrals (like cream, camel, or dusty rose) look gorgeous. Bright white can sometimes feel a little harsh against the winter backdrop—try ivory or off-white instead.

What to Wear for Your Winter Maternity Session (For Everyone Else Too!)
If your partner or older kids are joining you, have them dress in coordinating tones. Stick to neutrals with a pop of soft color, and avoid busy prints or neon colors. I always recommend mom chooses her outfit first, then builds everyone else’s look around that. And don’t forget—comfort matters! You’ll be moving around, sitting, standing, snuggling. Wear what makes you feel beautiful and comfortable.
Cold Kids = Unhappy Kids!
One thing I always remind families is that little ones get cold fast—especially when we’re near the beach or out in open areas with wind. And as any parent knows, once a kid is cold, it’s game over. So make sure to bundle them up! Warm layers under cute coats, wool socks in their boots, and even hand warmers in pockets can make all the difference. I promise they’ll still look adorable—and more importantly, they’ll be comfortable and happy throughout the session.

One Last Thing…
Blast the heat in your car on the way there! Showing up to your session nice and toasty helps you stay warm longer. I’ll also keep things moving during our shoot, and we’ll take breaks as needed so you’re never out in the cold for too long.
Winter maternity photos are some of my favorites—so soft, peaceful, and full of emotion. If you’ve been wondering what to wear for your winter maternity session, I hope this gave you the confidence to go for it.
And of course, if you ever want to run outfit ideas by me, I’m always happy to help!
