If you’re wondering what to wear for a family beach photoshoot in Connecticut, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I get asked most often.
I’m Linda Sobolewski of Linda Sobolewski Photography, based right here in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. I’ve been photographing families on the beautiful CT shoreline for many years. Along the way, I’ve learned what photographs beautifully, what to avoid, and how a few simple choices can elevate your entire gallery.
Here is my ultimate guide on how to style your family for the perfect family beach photoshoot.
1. What Should Mom Wear for Beach Family Pictures?

I always recommend dressing Mom first. Once you love your outfit, we can easily build everyone else’s wardrobe around yours.
When choosing your look, keep these favorite styling options in mind:
- Flowy maxi or midi dresses: These capture movement beautifully in the ocean breeze.
- Don’t love dresses? Opt for a linen jumpsuit or wide-leg trousers paired with a textured top.
- Soft, neutral colors: Cream, oatmeal, beige, or tan create a timeless look.
- Muted coastal tones: Dusty blues, sage greens, and dusty rose tones always photograph well.
- Textures: Look for subtle lace, linen, or ribbed fabrics to add visual depth.
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. When Mom feels good, the whole family relaxes!
2. Choose a Coastal Color Palette

Instead of the outdated “everyone in identical outfits” look, aim for a cohesive 3-to-4 color palette. This looks natural and modern.
My Favorite Beach Color Palettes
- Coastal Blues: Muted navy, slate blue, and soft cream.
- Earthy Warmth: Sand beige, sage green, and soft blush pink or coral.
- Sunset Tones: Lavender, soft yellow, and muted mauve.
*Important Styling Tip: Keep pure white to a minimum to avoid camera lens glare. Opt for cream, ivory, or oatmeal instead.
3. How to Mix Patterns (Without Clashing)

When it comes to patterns, less is usually more. The safest approach is to choose just one dominant pattern for the entire family – typically a beautiful floral dress for Mom. You can then pull solid colors from that pattern to style everyone else.
If you do want to mix two different patterns, make sure they aren’t competing for attention. Pair one bold design (like a larger floral) with a very subtle, dainty pattern (like a fine pinstripe or micro-polka dot). This adds visual interest without making the photos look too busy or distracting against the waves.
4. What Should Dad Wear for Beach Photos?

Dad’s outfit should complement Mom’s without matching it exactly. The Connecticut coast naturally has a relaxed feel, so comfortable, timeless pieces work best.
I highly recommend:
- Linen button-down shirts.
- Henleys or simple polo shirts.
- Khaki or light-colored jeans instead of shorts. They photograph a bit more polished and elevated.
- Soft blues, grays, and neutral tones that mimic the coastline.
- Skip the stark white: Just like with Mom’s outfit, avoid bright white shirts for Dad to prevent camera glare.
5. How to Dress the Kids for a Family Beach Photoshoot

When styling children, the most important rule is comfort. If they are scratching or pulling at their clothes, it shows in the photos. Even though matching outfits can be cute, I usually find that a little variety photographs beautifully and feels more natural.
Outfit Ideas for Boys
Keep it simple and classic. Soft fabrics like linen and cotton photograph beautifully. Light-colored shorts or lightweight pants all work well. Just ensure their clothing fits properly and isn’t too oversized.
Outfit Ideas for Girls
Flowy dresses and rompers look adorable against the waves. Opt for soft colors and simple, subtle patterns rather than large logos.
*Bonus Tip: Connecticut beaches can get windy! Think about secure hairstyles or cute headbands that will keep hair out of their eyes during the session.
6. What About White?

Years ago, matching white shirts and khakis were the classic beach photo look. Because of this, many families still gravitate toward it. However, I usually recommend keeping bright white to a minimum.
Bright white can photograph very harshly against the sand and water, especially during golden hour sunset sessions. When an entire family wears it, it can cause camera glare and wash out skin tones.
That doesn’t mean you need to avoid white altogether. A cream dress, an oatmeal sweater, or one family member wearing white can be beautiful. I simply recommend mixing softer shades of white with other colors and textures rather than having everyone wear matching white outfits.
A Few Final Beach Tips

- Bare feet always work beautifully at the beach.
- If you have long hair, think about how it will move in the ocean breeze.
- Lightweight layers and fabrics with a little movement photograph especially well.
- Most importantly, choose outfits that feel comfortable and like you.
