If you’re thinking about fall photo sessions in CT, timing is everything. Here in New England, the scenery shifts week by week throughout October—from dry greens to vibrant reds and golden tones, and eventually to soft, muted earth colors in November.
That said, Connecticut weather doesn’t always follow the calendar. Some years, the foliage peaks early; others, it runs late. There’s no perfect science to it—but this guide will help you understand the patterns I’ve seen year after year, and how to choose the best week for your session.

🍂 Week 1 of October
The first week of October still feels like late summer. Everything is a bit drier, and although the trees haven’t changed yet, there’s a gentle shift in the air. Temperatures are still mild—perfect for little ones or families who want that early fall look without layering up.
The photos below were all taken during the first week of October.

🍁 Week 2 of October
This is when fall photo sessions in CT start to truly shine. The foliage begins to turn with early patches of yellow, orange, and red popping up in different areas. The light this time of year is soft and golden, and temps are still comfortable, especially at sunset.

🌳 Week 3 of October
This is usually peak foliage week in most of Connecticut. The color is full and vibrant—deep reds, fiery oranges, and golden yellows. If you’re hoping for that classic New England fall backdrop, this is your moment.
Keep in mind—this is a high-demand week and books up quickly.
The photos below show what peak week often looks like.

🍂 Week 4 of October
By the end of October, the foliage is starting to fade, but it’s still stunning. Many leaves have fallen, creating a beautiful carpet of color. The trees may be more sparse, but that makes the light even more glowy. The mood is cozy, warm, and golden.
Here’s what you can expect from sessions during the fourth week of October

🍁 First Week of November
Don’t discount November—so many people assume it’s too late for fall photos, but it’s actually a beautiful time for cozy, golden portraits. The colors are more muted—think amber, rust, and bronze—but still so lovely. The trees are barer, which lets the late afternoon light pour through in the prettiest way.
It’s definitely cooler, so plan to layer up—but the look is still classic New England fall, just with a softer edge.

🍃 A Quick Note About Timing
As much as I wish I could promise the perfect fall colors, there are no guarantees. The weather, temperature, and rainfall all play a role in when (and how) the trees change.
What I can promise is that I’ll guide you toward the best possible timing based on the season—and that we’ll create something beautiful, no matter what.
