Every summer, this loving family gathers in Mystic, Connecticut to spend time together and continue a tradition that has become incredibly important to them: capturing their extended family photos in Mystic. As families grow and change, these yearly sessions create a visual record of the family at that moment in time. Children grow, cousins form stronger bonds, and grandparents get to see their family expanding around them.
Extended family photos Mystic sessions allow families to preserve something that doesn’t happen often anymore. Everyone is together in the same place at the same time. These photographs become part of a family’s history. Years from now, they will be able to look back and see exactly how their family looked during these summers together in Mystic, Connecticut.

Starting With the Full Group Photo
When I photograph extended family photos Mystic sessions, I always begin with the full group portrait. This is the photo that includes everyone in the family: grandparents, adult children, spouses, and all of the grandchildren together in one frame.
Starting with the big group photo ensures we capture the most important image right away while everyone is still fresh and relaxed. This is often the photograph families treasure the most because it shows every generation together. Once we have that image secured, everyone can relax knowing the most important photo is already taken.

Extended Family Photos Mystic Session Flow
After the full group photo, I move through the smaller groupings as quickly and efficiently as possible. This usually includes grandparents with all the grandchildren, each individual family unit, siblings together, cousins together, and any other combinations the family would like.
Even though I work quickly, extended family photos Mystic sessions can still take up to two hours depending on the size of the group and the number of combinations requested. With large families, there are often many important groupings to capture, and I want to make sure nothing gets missed.
Planning these groupings ahead of time helps the session move smoothly, which is especially helpful when younger children are involved. Even with a longer session, the process stays relaxed and organized so families never feel rushed or overwhelmed.

Why These Photos Matter
Extended family photos Mystic sessions are designed to be efficient while still capturing natural interactions between family members. Along the way, there are always a few candid moments. Cousins laughing together, grandparents hugging their grandchildren, or siblings joking with each other often become some of the most loved images.
When families make extended family photos part of their summer tradition in Mystic, they are creating something that will become more valuable every year: a collection of photographs that tells the story of their family growing together.
