As I begin my 5th year in business as a CT Family, Newborn and Senior photographer, I thought it would be fun to reflect back on my photography journey and how I got started.
How I Started My Photography Journey
It all started back when my girls were in their early teens. I loved to scrapbook which naturally led to my interest in photography. I saved up and purchased a Canon rebel, a 50mm lens, and took my first online workshop. The workshop was 12 weeks long and really taught me that photography was much more than posed, smiling images. It was an amazing 12 weeks that taught me many of the fundamentals of photography, that I still use today.
As my girls entered high school, they were who I practiced on. I did some epic prom shoots, photographed their sporting events, and their graduations. People started asking me to photograph their families. At first it was a lot of fun. But since I had a hard time saying no, I quickly started to burn out. Photography was supposed to be a fun creative outlet for me and it was turning into work. So sadly, I put my camera away.
Fast forward to 2015 when we moved out to the beach in Westbrook, CT. My back porch overlooked the water. Every morning, I would sit there with my coffee and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as the sky would turn into these amazing colors. It was an incredibly moving and spiritual experience for me. I felt like I was watching God’s artwork before me everyday. This prompted me to get my camera back out and start shooting again.
The Beginning of Linda Sobolewski Photography
At the same time, my girls were in college and I found I had a lot more free time on my hands. After thinking long and hard about what I could do, I decided to turn my passion for photography into a business. I purchased a new camera – a Canon Mark IV – my first full frame camera, and I started to take photography workshops. I took one workshop after another, learning absolutely everything from shooting in manual, to lighting, posing, editing, business – I was like a sponge and just wanted to learn and soak up everything I could.
And this time, it was my amazing sunrises that were my muse. I placed a model call on Facebook and saw two high school seniors, and one family my first summer. 🙂
Every year since then, then I have worked very, very hard at becoming a better photographer, and growing my business into a sustainable and profitable business.
