A few years ago, I kept getting lots of requests for family photos at tree farms who wanted to use them for their holiday cards. So, I decided to offer Tree Farm sessions, and they quickly became a big hit! Booking a Tree Farm session also means planning your wardrobe for it. Wondering what to wear? Check out my tips – tree farm outfits are a bit different from what you’d wear for sessions the rest of the year!
What To Wear For Your Tree Farm Session
1. Consider the Weather
In Connecticut, November tree farm sessions come with cool weather as we transition from fall into early winter. With the temperatures often on the chilly side, it’s important to dress in a way that’s stylish, warm and comfortable for your session.
2. Layers
Sweaters and Cardigans: Layering with a cozy sweater or cardigan is a great choice. Opt for chunky knits in neutral tones like cream, gray, or earthy tones to beautifully compliment the natural backdrop of the tree farm.
Jacket and Coats: A tailored wool coat or a stylish jacket is a perfect way to stay warm while adding a polished look. Pea coats, trench coats, or puffer jackets in classic colors like navy, camel or forest green are great choices.
Scarves: To complete the look, consider a thick scarf for added warmth and a pop of color or pattern. Plaid scarves, in particular, fit perfectly with the rustic charm of a tree farm.
3. Footwear
Boots: Ankle boots or knee-high boots are ideal for walking around the potentially muddy or uneven terrain of a tree farm. Opt for leather or suede in dark colors to keep the look cohesive.
Socks or Tights: To stay warm, pair a dress or skirt with thick tights or knee-high socks.
4. Colors
Earth tones and neutrals: Colors like olive green, burgundy, mustard, brown and cream blend beautifully with the natural backdrop.
Pops of Color: Consider adding pops of color with accessories, such as a bright red scarf or a mustard yellow hat.
5. Textures
Knits and Wools: These textures photograph amazing and add to the cozy vibe to a tree farm session.
Denim: A well-fitted pair of jeans is a versatile option that looks great with almost any top or jacket.
6. Accessories
Accessories are not just practical; they can also enhance your outfit. A cozy knit hat, a stylish scarf, and warm gloves are essential for keeping you comfortable in the cool November air.
Outfit Ideas:
Women: A sweater dress with tights and knee-high boots, layered with a scarf and coat, if needed.
Men: Dark jeans or khakis with a flannel shirt or vest.
For Families:
Coordinate outfits in complementary colors without being too matchy-matchy. For instance, one person could wear a burgundy sweater while another opts for a cream cardigan.
Focusing on layers, warm materials, and a cohesive color palette will help you stay comfortable during your session and look great in your photos!
Where To Shop:
I suggest starting out with the most affordable options possible because places like Old Navy, Target and Amazon have really learned to emulate current trends and offer great knock-offs of the more boutiquey looks. If these stores fail you, head to Baltic Born or Bohme if you’re in search for a dress, jumpsuit, or cute top for yourself. For the kids, try Zara or H&M Kids.
Just like in any other season, don’t be afraid to consult with your photographer about your wardrobe prior to your session. They won’t mind at all and would prefer to put in the time to help you plan if it means finding more photo-friendly clothing!
